Below is how the Barclays Premier League 2011/12 table looked after the conclusion of the final match of game week 2, the Manchester United v Tottenham Hotspur match at Old Trafford played on the evening of Monday 22nd August 2011.
As Man Utd defeated Spur 3-0 in that game, they joined Manchester City – who beat Bolton 3-2 on Saturday – and Wolverhampton – who collected a solid 2-0 win over Fulham on the weekend – as the only teams in the league to maintain a 100% win record after two matches.
Spurs and Everton, whose opening day fixture was postponed as a result of rioting in London, both failed to pick up any points on their first match, so find themselves in a cluster of four teams yet to get off the mark for 11/12.
The other two sides in the bottom four have had contrasting fortunes in the opening fortnight: West Brom opened their season with Man Utd followed by Chelsea in a baptism of fire: despite playing good football – and taking the lead in both matches – they found the class of both just too difficult to match.
Blackburn also saw a lead turned into a defeat on opening day when they were beaten by Wolves, but they were never in this weekend’s match away at Aston Villa, which they lost 3-1. Villa currently occupy fourth position – the final UEFA Champions League slot – and they will be hoping that this much improved first fortnight continues to Christmas and beyond.
There follows a slew of other teams on three and one points respectively at this early stage of 2011/12. It will be a number of weeks, yet, before fans will get a clear picture of the sort of campaign they can expect this term.
Next on the agenda for the Barclays Premier League 2011/12 is one more game week before the Transfer Window closes on Wednesday 31st August 2011 – when squads will be locked in until at least January.
