There are seven Barclays Premier League fixtures to be played on the evening of Wednesday 21st December 2011.
The top two teams are both in action on a bumper evening of football: leaders Manchester City welcome Stoke City, while Man Utd, Champions and current second-placers, travel to Fulham’s Craven Cottage.
The pick of the matches appears to be Arsenal’s journey to Villa Park to play Aston Villa. Both sides are arguably underachieving this term, though the Gunners have shown more improvement of the two, and are placed fifth to Villa’s tenth.
At the other end of the table, Queens Park Rangers host Sunderland in the Wearsider’s third match under the management of Martin O’Neill. With the Black Cats in 17th and QPR in 15th place, the loser could be looking at a Christmas spent in the relegation places. Points are important for both of these slightly inconsistent sides, if they are to begin a push up the league table.
For QPR and Sunderland, some pressure may be removed by the fact that the side who might exit the relegation places at their expense, Wigan Athletic, faces a difficult home match against 6th placed Liverpool. Liverpool will be keen to keep up the pressure on Tottenham and Chelsea – who face each other tomorrow night – in their push for a Champions League place.
Two mid-table matches make up the remaining fixtures for the evening as Newcastle (7th) host West Bromwich Albion (13th); and Everton (14th) entertain Swansea City (12th).
