Australian Open 2011 Tennis: Venus Williams Retires Through Injury

Venus Williams, the Ladies number 4 seed, has retired from the 2011 Australian Open tennis tournament after aggravating an injury in her Third Round match with German player Andrea Petkovic.

Williams was 0-1 down in the second game when she appeared to strain her groin muscle reaching for a service return, before calling for the physio, and later deciding to retire from the match.

Venus Williams’ sister, defending champion, Serena Williams, pulled out of the Australian Open two months ago, following an injury suffered post-Wimbledon when she stepped on broken glass in a restaurant, which means that neither of the Williams sisters, for so many years a dominant force in women’s tennis, is now able to contest Australian Open 2011.

Serena Williams won the Australian Open in 2009 and 2010. Venus’ retirement today means that another surname will be engraved on the Ladies trophy this year for the first time since Maria Sharapova of Russia lifted the title in 2008.
