Australian Open 2011 Tennis: Caroline Wozniacki to Face Li Na in Women’s Semi-Final

Caroline Wozniacki (1) secured World Number One status, and set up a Semi-Final with China’s Li Na (9) by defeating last year’s French Open Champion, Francesca Schiavone (6), 3-6 6-3 6-3.

Li (9) made lighter work of her Quarter-Final, in defeating German Petkovic 6-2 6-4, to set up the Semi-Final against the Danish World Number One.

It was not at all plain sailing for Wozniacki, in her quarter-final, as she found Schiavone to be in tremendous form in the opening set. The Italian could have been forgiven for being a little tired, following her epic Fourth Round win over Svetlana Kuznetsova in the Fourth Round – the longest match ever in Grand Slam women’s tennis –  however, she showed no signs of fatigue to grab the opening set against the number one seed, 6-3.

Wozniacki showed her class, however, as she lifted sets two and three by six games to three, displaying some good tennis in the process.

Li Na awaits Wozniacki in the next round, and both will be buoyed by the absence of both Serena and Venus Williams at the other side of the draw. An interesting Semi-Final is in store for fans of women’s tennis: Li Na has yet to drop a set in the tournament; while Wozniacki has been equally impressive thus far.

The winner of this Semi-Final match will stand a real chance of lifting the Ladies trophy this weekend.
