Alassane Ouattara Declared President of Côte d’Ivoire

The provisional results of the Commission Electorale Indépendante in Côte d’Ivoire have been declared and Alassane Ouattara has taken the Presidency. He gave the following statement:

My dear compatriots, dear friends of Côte d’Ivoire,

The Independent Electoral Commission has proclaimed this day, the provisional results of the second round of the presidential election. I congratulate and salute the high sense of responsibility shown by the IEC.

I congratulate Prime Minister Guillaume Soro Kigbafori, for outstanding leadership throughout this crisis.

I extend my heartfelt thanks to the facilitator of the inter-Ivorian dialogue; His Excellency Blaise Compaore; President of Burkina Faso; the Secretary General of the UN and the international community for their important contribution to maintaining peace in our country.

I welcome the sense of duty shown by the forces of national defence and security. They deserve our gratitude. I urge them to continue their efforts to preserve a climate of peace.

Finally, I would like to spare a solemn thought for all victims of this protracted crises. Côte d’Ivoire will never forget.

World leaders welcomed the announcement of the IEC and urged Ivorians to maintain peace and stability.
