1,000 Miners Captivate 70,000 Schalke Fans

There were emotional scenes ahead of the game between FC Schalke 04 and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim last Friday, as nostalgia played a key part in the pre-match entertainment. The club invited 1,000 miners who will be taking their final steps into the “Auguste Victoria Marl” mine in the coming days – it is due to shut at the end of the year. It was an incredible moment! The miners sung the “Steigerlied” – a traditional German mining song – in front of 70,000 supporters. It seemed to motivate the Schalke players, as they went on to win the game 1-0.
