UK TV: Comedy Rocks with Jason Manford

By ; published on January 14, 2011 at 4:28 pm

Northern British comic hits UK TV screens on the evening of Friday, 14th January 2011, with the first show in the new prime-time series of Rocks.

The show, hosted by Manford, which features stand-up comedy routines and live music, welcomes British comedians and as well as Australian comic in tonight’s opener. The band for the evening are Ireland’s The Script.

There’s also an entertaining and refreshingly different appearance from an act picked up at last year’s Edinburgh Festival, known only as “Boy With Tape on His Face” which is a bold move with a prime time Friday night slot, but one which certainly pays off.

Russell Kane and Mickey Flanagan fans will likely be familiar with the bulk of the material showcased tonight, but the jokes are proven winners, which will go down well with a diverse TV audience.

Jason Manford holds the show together well, with several brief stints of comedy, during which his wry observations of the foibles of life show just why he was selected to host this type of show. Manford comes across as something of a Northern Michael McIntyre, and does so with aplomb, even if some of the bonehomie feels, quite understandably, a little forced, as a result of the format.

Comedy Rocks with Jason Manford airs on the UK’s ITV1 channel at 9pm on Friday 14th January 2011.
