UEFA Champions League 2011/12: Group Stage Draw

The draw for the UEFA Champions League Group Stage takes place at 17:45 CET on Thursday 25 August 2011, at the Grimaldi Forum, Monte Carlo, Monaco, where representatives of the 32 clubs involved come together to discover which three clubs stand between them and a position in the Round of 16 knockout phase.

The draw was made to a backdrop of some drama, owing to the late withdrawal of Turkish side, Fenerbaçhe SK. The Turkish Football Federation withdrew Fenerbaçhe from the 2011/12 Champions League tournament on the evening of Wednesday 24th August 2011, a decision which was accepted by UEFA.

The UEFA Emergency panel placed Turkish Runner-Up, Trabzonspor AŞ, into the 2011/12 Champions League draw, and placed Play-Off opponents, Athletic Club Bilbao into the UEFA Europa League slot vacated by that side.

Speaking ahead of the draw, holding captain, Carles Puyol of FC Barcelona described holding the UEFA Champions League trophy as the “greatest ever” feeling.
