Typhoon Muifa is forecast to cross over the Chinese coast from the East China Sea over the next five days bringing gusts of up to 115 knots to major cities including Hangzhou and Shanghai.

National marine forecasters in China have warned sea-goers of bad weather and high waves, issuing an orange wave warning. Officials have cautioned citizens to anchor ships, strengthen port defences, tie down objects which could be caught by the wind and not to venture out when strong winds suddenly reduce to calm. The regions have been warned to prepare for flash floods.

The Minister of Water Resources, Chen Lei, told a meeting of emergency response staff that the inexperience of tourists and migrant workers in the area could result in casualties and urged authorities and workers to ensure that people received adequate warnings and information.
