Turkey has requested the deployment of Patriot missiles to its South Eastern border. Germany, the Netherlands and the United States have been relayed the request by NATO and will have to make a decision on whether to send the arms in support of Turkish border defences.
Turkey shares borders with Syria, Iraq, Iran, Armenia & Georgia. Rockets from Syria have killed a number of civilians on the Turkish border in recent weeks.
The request for Patriot missile systems is intended to give Turkey the capability to intercept such rockets in the air. P
atriots are manufactured by Raytheon company in the United States, but have been sold worldwide to countries including Israel and Saudi Arabia. The surface-to-air missile system has an anti-ballistic missile (ABM) system, which could protect Turkish interests from rocket attack.
