Tennis: Serena Williams Brisbane International Injury Raises Australian Open 2012 Concerns

Serena Williams has pulled out of the 2012 Brisbane International Ladies Singles tennis tournament after picking up an ankle injury during her 6-2 6-4 victory over Serbian Bojana Jovanovski.

Williams, 4th seed for the Brisbane International, hurt her ankle serving out for her second-round win.

While she limped from the court following the match, Serena Williams later reported that she would not be taking part in the quarter-final match with Daniela Hantuchova, which had been due to take place on Thursday, as she was retiring from the tournament.

Immediately after the match with Jovanovski, Williams was hopeful that she would be fit for Thursday’s quarter-final, however, she later made the decision to bow out in order to focus on recovery for the Australian Open 2012.

Williams will be particularly hopeful of making the Australian Open, a title she has picked up an incredible five times, after missing last year’s tournament through complications resulting from the accidental injury suffered standing on glass in a restaurant following Wimbledon 2010.
