Team Telefónica Lead Volvo Ocean Race Through South China Sea

Team Telefónica are leading leg 3 of the Volvo Ocean Race through the South China Sea off the coast of Malaysia. They fended off Groupama, who came within four nautical miles of the leaders, and PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG, who were eleven nautical miles behind.

The yachts are heading for Sanya – the Southernmost city in China – and have just left the Malacca Straits which connect the Indian Ocean with the Pacific Ocean in between Malaysia and Indonesia. The sailors have 500 nautical miles of racing left to do along the Vietnamese coast before the rankings for the third leg are decided.

The rankings on 31st January 2012 were as follows:

  • Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing
  • CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand
  • Team Sanya
