Severe Tropical Storm Ma-On is forecasted to cross the Northern Mariana Islands over the 14th and 15th of July 2011, according to estimates at the Japan Meteorological Agency. By the 16th, the storm is expected to reach gusts of up to 135 knots.

Set in the Pacific Ocean, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is a territory of the United States with its own legislature, but covered by the foreign affairs and defence departments of the United States. With around 70,000 inhabitants populating 180 square miles of islands, the cluster of land lies on the route of typhoons heading for the Philippines and Japan.
