Science: Herschel Reveals What Happens When a Star is Born

The European Agency () have this week unveiled the first results from their infrared observatory, known as , providing the above collection of images which go some way to explaining what happens during formation.

The new images, some of which are shown above, challenge several ideas about star birth and suggest new avenues for scientific research, which could shed light upon the origins of our own star, the sun, and how our part of space was formed around 5 billion years ago.
