RBS 6 Nations 2011: Ireland v England Preview

England go for the Grand Slam in the Green Isle with a match against Ireland starting at the Aviva Stadium at 5pm on Saturday 19th March 2011.

England Captain Mike Tindall is out with injured ankle ligaments from last weekend’s game against Scotland. Taking the captaincy is Nick Easter whilst Matt Banahan will take Tindall’s place in the team. Steve Thompson and Jonny Wilkinson represent the Grand Slam experience of the England team, but will start on the bench.

If successful, Martin Johnson will become only the sixth person to have won a Grand Slam as both player and coach, following in the footsteps of Wales’ John Dawes, England’s Clive Woodward and the Frenchmen Jean-Claude Skrela, Jacques Fouroux and Marc Lievremont. Johnson won two Grand Slams in his playing career – 1995 and 2003.

England also have the chance of a Grand Slam Triple this weekend in Ireland as the senior side, Under 20’s and Women’s teams have a perfect 12 out of 12 record in their Championships this season.
