RBS 6 Nations 2011: England v Italy Preview

England face Italy at Twickenham this afternoon, in each side’s second match of RBS 6 Nations 2011.
England fared considerably better than Italy last week, in picking up a seven point victory over Wales at the Millennium Stadium, in the process removing a hoodoo that had existed in the heart of Welsh rugby for the English since 2005. Italy on the other hand came dramatically close to toppling the Irish in Rome, and only a late Ronan O’Gara drop goal proved to be the difference last week.

England v Italy RBS 6 Nations 2011 – Match Prediction

England showed last week why they are favourites to lift the RBS 6 Nations 2011 and, while Italy’s defence proved itself, once more, to be one of the finest in World Rugby last week, England have more of a threat from one to fifteen than Ireland (short of Tommy Boyd) do.

Chris Ashton and Ben Foden running at pace onto good ball will likely prove the difference today – England should pick up one or two tries in either half.

Expect England to win by 10-20 points, particularly given home support, and Italy’s lack of attacking options. Italy’s best chance is a repeat of last week: if they can shut out England, and keep picking up three points when available, they could conceivably hang in there for another close game. If England get over the try line in the first 40, which is more than likely, it will be a 10+ points win for the hosts.

Match Details

England v Italy will kick off at 14:30 GMT (15:30 CET) at Twickenham, Lodon, on Saturday 12th February 2011.
