Europe’s highest active volcano, Mount Etna, on the Italian island of Sicily, began erupting this week, sending lava and flames which could be seen from nearby settlements in Catania and Taormina.

Etna is 11,000 ft high, and the airport at Catania, which is around 25KM away, has been closed since Wednesday night as a precaution owing to the eruption.
