South Africa got off to a winning start in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 with a seven wicket victory over the West Indies in New Delhi on Thursday 24th February 2011.
A scintillating innings from AB de Villers (107 Not Out) for the Proteas helped South Africa catch and pass the West Indies’ All Out 222 by recording a total of 223 for 3 wickets in 42.5 overs.
South Africa won the toss and put West Indies into bat, before making an early breakthrough by removing the dangerous opener, Gayle, for just 2 runs, caught Kallis bowled Botha.
A 111 run partnership from Smith (36) and DM Bravo (73) got West Indies back on track, but, once Smith fell, caught and bowled Tahir, the wickets began falling regularly, though, had DJ Bravo (40 from 37 deliveries) not been run out by good fielding from Morkel, it looked like they could still post a score in the difficult 5+ an over region.
Tahir was the pick of the South African bowlers, removing four wickets in total – including breaking the important partnership – for 41 runs off his 10 overs. Steyn also grabbed three wickets in a super-tight couple of spells which went for only 23 runs from 7.3 overs.
As it was, the tail failed to wag, and the final four batsmen added just 8 runs between them, as the West Indies were removed for 222 all out from 47.3 Overs, having put themselves in contention early in the innings.
When South Africa lost opener Amla and the usually free-scoring Kallis with just 20 runs on the board, it looked like they may struggle to meet their high expectations, however, AB de Villiers stepped up to provide an important innings of 107 Not Out, and a couple of high scoring partnerships – of 119 with Graeme Smith (45) and an unbroken 84 with JP Duminy (42 Not Out).
South Africa looked like a team who mean business in this tournament, while West Indies are probably one strike bowler short of the complete article. They also rely a little too heavily on the innings of Gayle to be comfortable.
