ICC Cricket World Cup 2011: Pakistan Demolish West Indies in Quarter Final

Pakistan blew away the West Indies in the first Quarter Final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, winning by 10 wickets at Mirpur on Wednesday 23rd March 2011.
West Indies won the toss and elected to bat, but were removed for just 112 All Out from 43.3 overs. Pakistan lost no wickets in hitting the 113 runs required to win in just 20.5 Overs, with Mohammad Hafeez making 61 and Kamran Akmal assisting with a solid 47.
West Indies were destroyed by some devastating spin bowling from Pakistan, in particular, once again, Shahid Afridi was at times unplayable en route to taking another four ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 wickets, for just 30 runs from his 9.3 overs.
But it was the bowling of Mohammad Hafeez that struck the hardest blow for Pakistan – the same player who went on to knock off the bulk of the runs in a man of the match performance – as the spinner went for just 16 runs from his 10 overs. More importantly, however, were the two wickets he collected: opener Smith (7) and the dangerous Dwayne Bravo (0) both fell to Hafeez, plumb LBW during a devastating spell of off spin.
Only Chanderpaul, who made 44 Not Out before running out of partners, seemed able to deal with the Pakistan bowlers, who had the ball turning and their tails up, as Afridi, helped by a quick brace from Saeed Ajmal, and a single wicket from Razzaq quickly demolished the tailenders.
The danger man for the West Indies, opener Chris Gayle, had looked in strong form before becoming the only player of the innings not to fall to a spinner, when Afridi pouched a rising drive he hit from the bowling of Gul. Gayle had scored two boundaries from 9 deliveires for 8 runs before he was caught by the Pakistan captain.
But there was little resistance from the West Indies batsmen, who posted four ducks and two tallies of just 1 run among their batting figures.
Pakistan, when they came in, had a total of just 112 to reach and surpass to guarantee a Semi Final spot against the winner of India and Australia, and, with some hard-hitting excellent stroke play from Kamran Akmal (47) and Mohammad Hafeez (61), they were soon home.
Pakistan, having won Group A, and played superbly in this Quarter Final, look very much the team to beat – the winner of their Semi-Final with India or Australia must surely be strong favourites to lift ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.
