Former World Number One golfer, Tiger Woods, will miss this month’s Open Championship after failing to recover from a leg injury.

The American has not been seen in competition since suffering a flare up of the injury during the Players Championship in May, where he suffered a Grade 1 mild medial collateral ligament sprain to his left knee and a mild strain to his left Achilles tendon in the process of playing a tricky shot from under the Eisenhower tree on the 17th.

In reference to his missing the Open Championship, which is scheduled to take place at Sandwich, UK, Woods posted an announcement on his official website which read:

“Unfortunately, I’ve been advised that I should not play in the British Open,”

“As I stated at the AT&T National, I am only going to come back when I’m 100 percent ready. I do not want to risk further injury. That’s different for me, but I’m being smarter this time. I’m very disappointed and want to express my regrets to the British Open fans.”

Woods expressed a desire not to return to action until his injury has cleared up completely, in order to facilitate his rehabilitation:

“In hindsight, I probably shouldn’t have competed at THE PLAYERS, but it’s a big event, and I wanted to be there to support the tour,”

“I’ve got to learn from what I did there and do it right this time and not come back until I’m ready.”

The Open Championship (The British Open) 2011 is set to take place at Royal St. George’s, Sandwich, between Thursday 14th and Sunday 17th July 2011.
