The 44th Modern & Vintage Sporting Guns Auction will be held at Gleneagles on 22nd August 2011.
Held by Gavin Gardiner in association with Sotheby’s, this year’s offering will include a 1909 Boss prototype which is estimated to fetch around £15,000. Gavin Gardiner described the piece as “the father of the modern Over and Under sporting shotgun” and explained that only 500 of this design were made in the subsequent 102 years.
Also included in the sale are a pair of 1919 Henry Atkin 12-bore sidelock ejector guns built for Lord Ivor Charles Spencer-Churchill as a 21st birthday present. As the cousin of Sir Winston Churchill and the younger son of the 9th Duke of Marlborough, it was almost inevitable that he should join the army – later joining the French Legion of Honour for his service in World War I. The guns are expected to fetch around £18,000.
Highlights from the sale will be on view at the CLA Game Fair at Blenheim Palace, 22nd – 24th July 2011.
