Formula 1 2011 Canadian Grand Prix: Alonso Top Time in Faltering Second Practice

The second practice session at the Formula 1 2011 Canadian Grand Prix, on the afternoon of Friday 10th June, saw Fernando Alonso go one better than his P1 second fastest, to record the best lap of the session, in a time of 1:15.107.

However, the one and a half hour second practice was a little stoccato thanks to a number of accidents, including two red flags following accidents from Kobayashi of Sauber and Mark Webber of Red Bull.

Perhaps the most affected by those accidents were the McLarens, in particular Lewis Hamilton, who had just emerged on his red-banded Super-Soft tyres to run a few laps on the ‘options’ each time the red flag came out. On the second occassion, Hamilton also collected a puncture from debris on the track when he returned to the track. Despite these tribulations, Hamilton managed to post a fourth best 1:15.977.

The two drivers between Alonso’s Ferrari and Hamilton’s McLaren-Mercedes were Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull (1:15.476) and Alonso’s Ferrari team-mate, Felipe Massa (1:16.601).

The Mercedes men, Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher, who had been so fast in P1 were experimenting with their rear wing, which might explain their off-the-pace laps placing them 19th and 20th respectively.

Paul di Resta put in a good performance in the Force India to go sixth best in 1:16.089, though his team-mate Adrian Sutil had a more tricky time, catching the armco and pulling his front left wheel all but off in the process.

Di Resta was just one tenth of a second behind Jenson Button who failed to get any rhythm in his McLaren, for fifth best time.

Saturday’s third practice and Qualifying sessions will be when the teams really gun for the fastest lap – the signs are that McLaren and Ferrari will be every bit as strong as expected, though Red Bull, when completing a session, have the raw pace to once more threaten the front row positions.

A fascinating race weekend still sees more than 6-8 cars in with a real chance of lifting Sunday’s race after an intriguing second qualifying period.
