Football: Wales to Play Gary Speed Memorial Friendly

Gary Speed managing Wales

The FA of Wales has announced that the nation is to play an international friendly fixture against Costa Rica on 29 February 2012 as a memorial to former manager Gary Speed, who took his own life in November 2011.

Speed, 42, was manager of Wales when he died on 27 November 2011.

The match, Wales’ first friendly since Gary Speed died, will be played at the Cardiff City Stadium on 29th February 2012.

In his time as a player for Wales, Gary Speed made 85 appearances, scoring 7 goals. As Wales manager, he was at the helm from 8 February 2011 until his death, a year which saw the Wales National side named “Best Movers” in the FIFA Rankings having gained the most places of any national side in 2011.

Speed’s last match in charge of Wales was a 4-1 over Norway.

Wales v Costa Rica kicks off at 19:45 (GMT) on Wednesday 29th February 2012.
