Football: UEFA Europa League Results, Thursday 16 December 2010

The final group games of UEFA Europa League 2010/2011 took place on the evening of Thursday 16th December 2010, as the teams in groups A, B, C, G, H and I took to the field to decide who would make the Round of 32.

Group A

  • Juventus 1-1 Man City
  • Red Bull Salzburg 0-1 Lech Poznan

Manchester City won Group A, courtesy of their point away at Juventus. The Italian giants failed to qualify, but could have put Lech Posnan to the top of the group had Jo not equalised for the visitors. As it was, City finished level on points with Lech Posnan, who worked a good 1-0 away win at Red Bull Salzburg to pile pressure on the Manchester side, who win the group only thanks to their having the better record in face-to-face meetings. Juve finished the group in third place, on a disappointing six points.

Group B

  • Aris Salonika 2-0 Rosenborg
  • Bayer Leverkusen 1-1 Atletico Madrid

Aris Salonika secured their progression to the next phase in second place with a good 2-0 win at home against Rosenborg. Atletico Madrid had to beat Bayer Leverkusen – the group winners – away, to go through. They could only manage a 1-1 draw, so they miss out on the knockout rounds.

Group C

  • Levski Sofia 1-0 Sporting
  • Lille 3-0 AA Gent

Lille knew that a win would see them leapfrog AA Gent in the table and grab themselves a place in the last 32 draw, and they secured this with a little in hand with a 3-0 home victory. Levski Sofia got a good 1-0 win against Sporting Lisbon, though the Portuguese side needed no points to win the group.

Group G

  • AEK Athens 0-3 Zenit St Petersburg
  • Anderlecht 2-0 Hajduk Split

Zenit St Petersburg threw their hat in the ring for the tournament favouritehood, and made it six wins out of six, with a 3-0 away win at AEK Athens. The Greek side missing out on qualification as a result of Anderlecht’s solid 2-0 win at home to Hajduk Split – though level on seven points, the past results mean that Anderlecht go through.

Group H

  • Getafe 1-0 Young Boys
  • VfB Stuttgart 5-1 Odense BK

Stuttgart confirmed group supremacy with a strong 5-1 win over bottom side Odense BK. Getafe will be left wondering what might have been after they defeated Young Boys 1-0, but the result was not enough to overcome a 5 point gap. Young Boys go through as runners-up.

Group I

  • Debrecen 2-0 Sampdoria
  • PSV Eindhoven 0-0 FC Metalist Kharkiv

Bottom side, Debrecen, finally got their first points from the six fixtures with a 2-0 home win against a lacklustre Sampdoria, while PSV Eindhoven and FD Metalist Kharkiv were content to play out a goalless draw in their dead rubber game. PSV win with Kharkiv in second place.
