Football: UEFA Champions League Results, Wednesday 24 November 2010

UEFA Champions League football returned this evening as teams from groups A, B, C and D took part in their penultimate group match.

In Group A, Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan have both assured themselves of a Last 16 place with one group game to go after both sides picked up home victories. Spurs were impressive once more with a 3-0 win over Werder Bremen at White Hart Lane, while Inter played well to bag a 1-0 victory over Twente in the San Siro.

The door to Group B was blown slightly ajar by Shalke beating Lyon 3-0 at home. That win would have put Lyon in real danger, but for Benfica getting turned over 3-0 away at Hapoel Tel Aviv. Benfica will need to beat Shalke by a number of goals, and hope that Hapoel can repeat tonight’s success against Lyon in the final match if they are to progress from this tight group.

Man Utd and Valencia will go through from Group C after both sides picked up wins in differing styles. United travelled to Ibrox to face Rangers and the Scottish side looked to have stifled the English into a 0-0 draw until Wayne Rooney scored from the spot on 86 minutes during his return match from injury. Valencia were rampant, despatching Turkish side Bursaspor 6-1 at home.

Rubin Kazan did what they needed to do tonight: they won against FC Copenhagen 1-0 at home setting up an exciting final week. Barcelona secured their group win with a solid 3-0 win away at Panathinaikos, and will face Rubin Kazan at home in the final group match. Copenhagen are one point ahead of Kazan, so their fate is in their hands next time, though anything short of a win will see them casting nervous glances towards Camp Nou.
