Football: UEFA Champions League Results, Tuesday 7 December 2010

UEFA Champions League groups A, B, C and D had their concluding games yesterday evening, on 7th December 2010.

Group A – UEFA Champions League 2010/2011

  • FC Twente 3-3 Tottenham
  • Werder Bremen 3-0 Inter Milan

In Group A, the question was who would top the group, Inter Milan of Italy’s Serie A or Tottenham Hotspur of Englands Premier Leegue. Tottenham picked up a point away at FC Twente by securing a 3-3 draw, despite leading three times, while Inter fell to a poor 3-0 defeat away at Werder Bremen meaning they qualify in second place. Twente’s point is enough to put them into the Europa League.

Group B – UEFA Champions League 2010/2011

  • Benfica 1-2 Schalke 04
  • Lyon 2-2 Hapoel Tel-Aviv

Shalke topped Group B, and extinguished Benfica’s slim hopes of qualification in the process with a good 2-1 win in Portugal. Lyon ensured their progression, whatever the result in Benfica, by earning a point in a 2-2 draw with a much improved Hapoel Tel Aviv. Shalke win the group, while Lyon qualify in second place. Benfica pick up the UEFA Europa League lifeline in third.

Group CUEFA Champions League 2010/2011

  • Bursaspor 1-1 Rangers
  • Man Utd 1-1 Valencia

Two one-all draws in Group C mean that the group remains very much ‘as you were’ for the qualification positions. Man Utd overcame an early Valencia goal to get the point they needed to secure the group win with a 1-1 result. Rangers would have been third in the group whatever the result: they are in the UEFA Europa League. Man Utd win the group, with Valencia in second place.

Group DUEFA Champions League 2010/2011

  • Barcelona 2-0 Rubin Kazan
  • FC Copenhagen 3-1 Panathinaikos

There were no surprises in Group D, either, as Barcelona were good enough to win Group D by a margin of four points following their 2-0 home victory over Rubin Kazan. FC Copenhagen qualify in second place on ten points after beating Panathinaikos 3-1 in Denmark. Rubin Kazan pick up the third place that appeared most likely at the start of the evening: they will be a difficult prospect for any club in the UEFA Europa League as, particularly at home, they are difficult to break down.
