Two more UEFA Champions League Round of 16 First Leg matches take place on the evening of Tuesday 22nd February 2011, as the football world turns its attention to matches in Denmark and France.
FC Copenhagen v Chelsea – Kick-Off (CET) 20:45
Barclays Premier League Champions, Chelsea, were knocked out of the English FA Cup on Saturday by Everton, and will therefore be keen to return from this first leg with a good chance of progressing to the next phase of the UEFA Champions League, particularly as they currently lie fifth in their domestic league, and another Championship appears to be beyond them this term.
FC Copenhagen, however, proved to be a tough nut to crack, and recorded a good 1-1 draw with FC Barcelona in the Group phase, meaning that tonight’s match will no doubt be an entertaining affair.
Lyon v Real Madrid – Kick-Off (CET) 20:45
Jose Mourinho, who won the UEFA Champions League with Inter Milan last season, takes his Real Madrid side across the border into France for a first leg match with Lyon.
Key men in this game are likely to be Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo for Real Madrid, who have both scored four goals in this season’s Champions League; and Lyon’s Michel Bastos, who has three to his name.
Lyon also have an excellent goalkeeper, French international Hugo Lloris, though he is ably and equally matched by Real’s Spanish World Cup winner, Iker Casillas.
Both sides are currently within four (Lyon) or five (Real Madrid) points of the top of their respective domestic leagues, though Real Madrid must be considered favourites for this match, even with the disadvantage of playing away from home.
That being said, this match could well be a close-run thing; the two-legged tie may be no closer to conclusion at the end of 90 minutes this evening.
