Two more first leg matches take place in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 on the evening of Wednesday 16th February 2011.
Arsenal v Barcelona – Kick-Off (CET) 20:45
Perhaps the match everyone has been looking forward to since the draw was made, Arsenal will face Barcelona in the Emirates Stadium, London, with both sides in good league form.
Arsenal were the highest scoring club in the group phase, with 18 goals, despite slipping to two uncharacteristic defeats in Group H. Barcelona were impressive, and unbeaten, to win Group D.
The game will hinge around how Arsenal deal with Barca’s impressive array of attacking footballers, such as Lionel Messi, though Arsenal may be buoyed by an early return by Samir Nasri, the playmaker who has been carrying a knee injury of late, and have been scoring freely themselves this season, making this match a fascinating prospect for neutral and partisan fans alike.
Roma v Shakhtar Donetsk – Kick-Off (CET) 20:45
Roma will be favourites for this home match with Shakhtar Donetsk despite having come through as runners up in Bayern Munich’s Group E. Shakhtar won Arsenal’s Group H to show their Champions League class, so this will be anything but a formality for the Italian giant, who has been having a difficult time in Italy’s Serie A – they are placed 8th currently – of late.
The last time these two sides met in European competition, Shakhtar Donetsk won 1-0 at home, but were defeated 4-0 in Rome – they will hope for significantly better this evening.
Shakhtar Donetsk have never won in Italy in European competition.
