Football: Scottish Communities League Cup 2011/12 Third Round Results, Tuesday 20 September 2011

Five Scottish Communities League Cup 2011/12 Third Round matches took place on an entertaining evening of cup football in Scotland, on Tuesday 20th September 2011.

Aberdeen 3-3 East Fife (East Fife win 4-3 on pens)

Game of the night and entertainment of the evening was also upset of the night as East Fife – from the bottom of the Second Division of Scottish Football – beat Aberdeen of the SPL on penalties following an exhilarating 3-3 draw.

Travelling North to Aberdeen’s Pittodrie ground, the East Fife team did not seem cowed by their Premier League surroundings, and took a 31st minute lead through Wallace before Aberdeen did what many expected of them, and equalised through McArdle on 40 minutes to make the half time score 1-1.

Mackie put the hosts in front on 47 minutes, giving the Premier League side the lead for the first time. However, East Fife were far from blown away once they fell behind: adding two goals in quick succession to turn things around, as Park (54) and Floan (57) looked to help them accomplish the seemingly impossible.

It looked as though East Fife – who had scored from each of their three shots on target in this match – were on course to “mug” aberdeen in normal time, before Fallon scored two minutes into stoppage time to set up a nervy additional half hour to be played.

Somehow Eats Fife, who rarely threatened during Extra Time, clung on to get to a penalty shootout, with goalkeeper Mark Ridgers continuing the fine form he had displayed in normal time to take the match to penalties. If his play in the first 120 minute had been important, Ridgers‘ three penalty saves were crucial in the shootout, as they helped lowly East Fife to one of the biggest shock victories in recent memory, as they won this footballing coin-flip 4-3, to spark raucous celebrations from the visiting players, staff and fans.

Airdrie Utd 0-2 Dundee Utd

There was to be no similar display from second division Airdrie, who fell to a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Dundee United, following goals from Dow (11) and Daly (76).

Kilmarnock 5-0 Queen of South

Kilmarnock progressed to the last eight of the Scottish League Cup in impressive style, recording a 5-0 home victory over Queen of the South.

Men with names beginning with the letter “H” were on target for Kilmarnock, with a half-time straddling Heffernan Hat-Trick sandwiched by an early Harkins goal, and a late strike from Hutchinson.

Motherwell 2-2 Hibernian (Hibs win 7-6 on pens)

Another evening of drama was played out at Fir Park, where the night’s all-SPL match between Mothwell and Hibernian lived up to expectations, with the Edinburgh based outfit narrowly winning out 7-6 on penalties after an entertaining 2-2 draw.

O’Connor got the visitors off to a great start, by taking the lead on 19 minutes, but Mothewell responded well with two first half goals of their own to turn things around, when Lasley (30) and Higdon (40) scored.

In the second half, O’Connor added his second on the night to level scores at 2-2 – with just three minutes remaining – on 87 minutes, taking the tie into Extra Time.

Following a further goalless half hour, during which the home side had the ball in the net, only to see the offside flag raised, the match went to penalties. Mark Brown saved two penalties in a tense shootout, allowing Hibs to progress by the narrowest of margins.

St Johnstone 0-2 St Mirren

Two first half goals – an own goal from St Johnstone’s Adams and a 45th minute effort from Goodwin ensured St Mirren progressed from this slightly cagey all-Premier battle in Perth, which saw the visitors progress to the last eight of the competition.
