The first leg of the English League Cup Semi Final between Blackburn and Aston Villa, which was due to take place at Ewood Park this evening, has been postponed due to the freezing conditions in the North West of England.
While the playing surface is in good enough condition for the match to take place, the decision to postpone the match was taken in consultation with local police due to fears that supporters would have difficulty getting to and from the match in the sub-zero weather.
A statement on the Blackburn Rovers club website read:
“While the pitch is playable, it would be unadvisable to expect fans and staff to attempt to get to the match.Even if fans are able to get to Ewood Park we would not like to speculate on what type of journey home they may face at 2200 GMT when temperatures will be sub-zero.
The weather forecast states we can expect more snow and freezing temperatures in Lancashire and that heavy snow is expected in the Midlands later and will continue into the early hours of Wednesday.
The decision was taken in conjunction with the police and following consultation with the Football League.”
