Four Barclays Premier League fixtures were played on the evening of Tuesday 1st February 2011, including matches featuring the first, second and fourth teams in the table.
Arsenal 2-1 Everton
Arsenal kept their title challenge alive by coming back from a goal down to defeat Everton 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium. Louis Saha put Everton ahead on 24 minutes until two second half goals from Arshavin (70) and Koscielny (74) turned the result around for the hosts.
Man Utd 3-1 Aston Villa
Manchester United kept their lead at the top of the table to five points with a good 3-1 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford. Two first half Wayne Rooney goals (1, 45+1) eased the hosts’ nerves, before Darren Bent (58) gave Villa hope. A 63rd minute Vidic goal extinguished that hope, however, as Man Utd ran out deserved winners.
Sunderland 2-4 Chelsea
Chelsea fought back from going behind early to a 4th minute Bardsley goal with goals from Lampard (15 pen) and Kalou (23) before Richardson got the hosts back on terms on 26 minutes. The sides came in at 2-2, but Chelsea were more workmanlike in the second half to score four goals for the second match in succession and keep their title challenge on course. Terry (60) and Anelka (90+3) got the second half goals for the visitors.
West Brom 2-2 Wigan
West Brom and Wigan, both enduring a spell of abject form, played out a somewhat predictable draw in unpredictably entertaining fashion at the Hawthorns. Odemwingie (5) got the hosts off the mark before N’Zogbia (20) equalised and Watson (43) put Wigan in front. A 79th minute Fortune goal got West Brom back on level terms, in a match they perhaps shaded in terms of possession and territory, though a point is a fair result for Wigan’s better industry in front of goal.
Wigan remain in the relegation places, in 18th, though they pull level on points with Birmingham, in the safe position one above.
