Football: Barclays Premier League Results, Sunday 2 January 2011

Two Barclays Premier League fixtures took place on Sunday, 2nd January 2011.

Chelsea 3-3 Aston Villa

Chelsea and Aston Villa played out a dramatic and entertaining match at Stamford Bridge. A flurry of late goals meant fans witnessed a classic match, which ended with the sides level at 3-3.

Chelsea opened the scoring through a Frank Lampard penalty on 23 minutes after Florent Malouda was brought down in the box, but Villa equalised through a penalty of their own, scored by Ashley Young on 41 minutes. The sides were 1-1 at half time.

Heskey gave Villa a 2-1 lead in the 47th minute, and looked to have heaped the pressure on Chelsea’s out of sorts team before Didier Drogba scored on 84 minutes.

Chelsea captain John Terry looked to have sealed a dramatic late winner when he finished on 89 minutes, but Villa grabbed an injury time equaliser on 91 minutes through the head of Clark, who finished from a great Albrighton cross to level this entertaining match.

A point was a fair result, however, as both sides hit the same number of shots, and no side controlled for large periods. This was simply Premier League football at its exciting best. Chelsea remain outside of the UEFA Champions League places, in fifth. Villa are 15th, just two points from the danger zone.

Wigan 0-1 Newcastle

Newcastle climbed to 10th in the league, while Wigan remain hovering perilously close to the relegation places, in 17th, just one point above the bottom three, following this 1-0 result.

Shola Ameobi scored the only goal for the visitors in a tight affair, after 19 minutes. His finish was simple as the ball rebounded to him from the post following Joey Barton’s saved effort, which was followed-up by Peter Lovenkrands.

Wigan will be a little disappointed that they got nothing from a match which they were equal to their visitors for most of the match. Newcastle will be delighted to have followed up successive defeats with this victory: particularly without their top-scorer, Andy Carroll, who was missing as a result of a thigh injury.
