Football: Barclays Premier League Results, 22-23 January 2011

Barclays Premier League action took place over the weekend with eight matches on Saturday 22nd January and one game on Sunday, 23rd January 2011.

Man Utd were impressive at Old Trafford, and they pulled ahead at the top of the league with a 5-0 home win over Birmingham, while their across town rivals slipped to a 1-0 defeat away at Aston Villa. Villa’s goal came courtesy of a Darren Bent debut strike.

Arsenal moved into second in the table thanks to a 3-0 home win over Wigan Athletic: all of the goals came from a Robin van Persie hat-trick.

Sunderland got back to winning ways with a 2-1 win away at Blackpool to consolidate their 6th position, and make up a little ground on Tottenham in 5th, who were held to a 1-1 draw at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. A super-late Aaron Lennon strike was needed to prevent Spurs making the long trip back to London without a point.

At the foot of the table, Wolves were beaten by a resurgent Liverpool, 3-0, in what was possibly their best performance in the league this season. Meanwhile West Ham led twice, but failed to take more than a point from their trip to Merseyside as Everton claimed a point in a 2-2 result.

West Brom’s downward momentum continued on Sunday, as they lost 2-0 away at Blackburn. The Baggies are now just three points safe.
