Five Barclays Premier League fixtures are scheduled to take place on the afternoon of Saturday 16th April 2011, as the teams not competing in this weekend’s FA Cup Semi Final matches at Wembley look to make a move up the table.
Birmingham v Sunderland – Kick-Off (BST) 15:00
Sunderland have been sliding down the table of late, despite a good early start to the season, while Birmingham have done the opposite, pulling out of the relegation zone and looking much better since their surprise Carling Cup victory over Arsenal at Wembley. The clubs have moved so close together that a win for Birmingham would see them draw level with Sunderland, on 38 points. The Black Cats will be in clear danger if they fail to pick up a point from this match, as a result.
Blackpool v Wigan – Kick-Off (BST) 15:00
Blackpool v Wigan is a relegation six-pointer which starts with Wigan, bottom of the league, deep in the relegation places, juyst two points behind Blackpool, who occupy the last safe position in the league: 17th. The winner of this match will likely end the day clear of the drop zone; while the loser will almost certainly be in it.
Everton v Blackburn – Kick-Off (BST) 15:00
Everton v Blackburn usually has a mid-table feel to it at this stage of the season, and nothing is new this term, except for the fact that Blackburn are in need of a win to get away from the vortex at the bottom of the table. Everton, with a win, will go one point behind local rivals, Liverpool, who are 6th, so there’s plenty to play for this afternoon.
West Brom v Chelsea – Kick-Off (BST) 15:00
West Brom have opened up a good gap between themselves and the relegation placed they occupied earlier in the season, so they’ll be looking for at least a point at home to Chelsea, who themselves need to keep on winning if they are to get anywhere near last season’s Premier League success.
West Ham v Aston Villa – Kick-Off (BST) 15:00
West Ham v Aston Villa is another match which could have relegation ramifications come the end of the season: West Ham are 18th in the table; Villa are 14th. A win for either side would put them a step closer to safety, while defeat for Villa would probably signal the start of a relegation battle proper.
