Patrick Swayze died this morning aged 57 after a 20 month fight with pancreatic cancer.

The movie star, best known for roles in Dirty Dancing and Ghost, was diagnosed with the disease in July 2008.

Swayze’s movies were enjoyed by millions around the world: Dirty Dancing (1987) his breakthrough success, grossed over $300million world-wide despite a tiny budget. Ghost (1990) in which Swayze played the lead alongside Demi Moore, grossed over $500million worldwide.

Swayze also co-wrote and sang one of the songs featured in Dirty Dancing proving his skills extended into singing and songwriting as well as acting and dancing – the latter must surely have been influenced by his Choreographer mother whom he grew up with in Houston, Texas. Swayze had two brothers and two sisters.

Patrick Swayze leaves his wife of 34 years, Lisa, and his mother, Patsy.
