FBI Charges Moroccan Man with Attempt to Use Weapon of Mass Destruction

The FBI has charged a Moroccan man with having attempted to use a weapon of mass destruction against United States property. According to the bureau, the 29 year old man had been residing in Virginia and had allegedly tried to detonate a bomb in a suicide attack on US Capitol building.

FBI Washington Field Office’s Joint Terrorism Task Force arrested the man following an undercover operation. Amine El Khalifi appeared before judges on 17th February 2012 and a trial date has not yet been set to test the case against him.

The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginiam, Neil MacBride, said the man had believed that he was working with Al Qaeda. There have been previous cases of agents posing as Al Qaeda middlemen documented in the book The Black Banners by Ali Soufan. Such inducement by undercover agents is sometimes considered prejudicial in other countries.
