Maggie Smith pulls out all the stops in a stellar performance in this crucial episode of the hit Downton Abbey. Mr Bates reveals his big secret, William inspires Daisy to be a better person and Carson has to exercise extreme discretion in two separate sticky situations.

The rivalry between Edith and Mary continues with Edith’s treachery bearing fruit. The younger sister even secures a date whilst Mary’s fortunes continue to fall. Matters are complicated by Cybil’s involvement in a protest which sees Mr Crawley earn the youngest’s attention. Mary’s position is precarious and the two countesses are beginning to consider their options when an unexpected windfall comes their way.

William is kind and patient as ever, but shows a talent for looking after horses that he hides. He knows that his parents are proud of his position as second footman and so continues in his job. Could it all be about to change for the loyal servant?

Episode 6 of Downton Abbey will be aired at 9pm on Sunday 31st October 2010 on ITV1 in the UK.
