The German President, Christian Wulff, has resigned following the acceleration of an investigation into his financial affairs. Angela Merkel praised the politician saying that he had stood for a “modern, tolerant Germany”. The German Chancellor also expressed her regret at his leaving and the utmost respect for the way in which he and his wife, Bettina, represented Germany with “dignity at home and abroad”.
The CDU, CSU and FDP parties will first discuss Mr Wulff’s replacement before consulting the Social Democrats and Alliance 90/The Greens. Mr Wulff had said it was no longer possible to perform his duties without the full confidence of the German people and state apparatus behind him.
