The fifth gameweek of Barclays Premier League 2013/14 concluded on Sunday 22 September, with the Manchester Derby – City took the three points with a 4-1 victory – and an entertaining weekend of football ended with Sunderland sacking manager Paulo di Canio with the Black Cats rooted to the foot of the table.
Man City moved up to third in the table with their 4-1 rout over Man Utd on Sunday. Both Chelsea, who beat Fulham 2-0 at home, and Arsenal, who beat Stoke 3-1 at home, got important home wins to climbs the table. Chelsea ended Saturday top of the league, but wins for Arsenal, Tottenham and Man City on Sunday mean they finished the weekend in fourth place.
Liverpool’s first loss of the season, a 1-0 home defeat to Southampton on Saturday, means they slipped from first to fifth.
Everton remained the only side in the league not to have tasted defeat this term with a c0me-from-behind 3-2 victory away at West Ham. They moved to 6th in the table as a result. The scoreboard progressed in remarkably similar fashion during Hull City’s 3-2 away win at Newcastle. Hull move to 11th in the table.
Sunderland remain fixed to the bottom of the table, after West Brom picked up their first victory at home to the Black Cats, winning in a comfortable looking 3-0. Sunderland sacked their manager, Paulo di Canio after the result.
Crystal Palace, who lost 2-0 at home to Swansea, and Fulham, who lost by the same amount away at Chelsea, joined Sunderland in the bottom three, of what is shaping up to be a relegation battle between perhaps six or seven sides this term.
