Azerbaijan Wins Eurovision Song Contest with “Running Scared”

Azerbaijan has been crowned the victorious nation at the 56th Eurovision Song Contest in Dusseldorf, Germany.

The 2011 Eurovision Song Contest was claimed by Ell and Nikki, who won the competition with “Running Scared” – a rock ballad duet performed against a curtain of falling sparks and a team of dancers clad in white.

Eldar Gasimov and Nigar Jamal performed their winning song in English, but used the opportunity of the press conference directly after the award ceremony to perform a song to the world’s press in their native Azeri language.

Winning with 221 points, the central Asian nation will now host the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest. The Azerbaijani President, Ilham Aliyev, and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva telephoned Eldar Gasimov and Nigar Jamal on 15th May to congratulate them on the “brilliant victory”. According to an official statement, they “wished the talented young people further success”.

The President of neighbouring Georgia also telephoned his Azerbaijani counterpart on the occasion saying that the result had been warmly received in the country.
