Australian Open 2012 Tennis: Roger Federer Through to Semi-Final After Straight Sets Win Over del Potro

(3) has made it through to the Semi-Final of the 2012 Australian Open Men’s Singles Championship after recording a brilliant straight sets victory over Argenitine, Juan Martín del Potro.

The Swiss was in imperious form to defeat del Potro 6-4 6-3 6-2 with all his customary and relentlessly high-quality tennis.

The match, which was Federer’s 1,000th at Tour level, saw Federer in his 31st consecutive Grand Slam Quarter-Final – he has lost just three – and, in defeating del Potro, he made it through to what will be the 30th time he has walked onto the court for a Grand Slam Semi-Final, at the age of 30.

Federer, who was without a Grand Slam title last year for the first time since 2003, showed that the form that took him to the ATP World Tour Finals victory at the end of 2012, was still with him, as he breezed past del Potro – himself returning from a bad year in 2011, when a wrist injury kept him out for much of the season.

Federer will face the winner of today’s other bottom-half Quarter-Final, the winner of Tomas Berdych and long-time Grand slam rival, Spaniard Rafael Nadal.
