Australian Open 2012 Tennis: Nadal Defeats Federer to Make Final

Rafael Nadal (2) has defeated his old adversary, Roger Federer (3) in the Semi-Final of the 2012 Australian Open Men’s Singles, after a mesmerising match ended with the Spaniard winning through three sets to one.

Nadal lifted the semi-final following a 6-7 (7-5) 6-2 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 victory.

It was Federer, the old master, who took the opening set, following a tie-breaker as the match many still wish were the final showed it was to be every bit as close as fans had anticipated. Despite having grabbed an early break, though, Federer received an early warning that Nadal would not give up easily by breaking back before forcing the tie-breaker.

But in the second set, Nadal upped his game and collected two breaks – and four games – in succession to wrap the set up 6-2.

In set three, it went with serve until Federer went 4-3 up after breaking his opponent on the fourth break point of game seven. However, Nadal managed to immediately break back once more, and this time, after the match went to a tie-breaker, it was Nadal who raced away to a lead in the coin-flip.

However, this time it was Federer’s powers of resilience which came to the fore, as the Swiss ace saved four set points, before Nadal finally took the set for a two-one lead.

In the fourth set, Federer got himself a break point which would put him up 5-4 and serving for the match. Federer has a forehand opportunity which squirmed narrowly wide, before Nadal held his serve. In the very next game, it was Nadal who seized the break point opportunity, and it was he who would serve for the match.

Federer saved a couple of match points, but Nadal refused to buckle, and eventually “game, set match” was called as Nadal won through to his fourth Grand Slam Final in succession.

Nadal will play the winner of Djokovic (1) and Murray (4) who face each other in the second Men’s Singles Semi-Final on Friday 27th January 2012.
