Australia: Indian Man Set Alight in Melbourne

By ; published on January 9, 2010 at 6:26 am

An Indian man who was walking home from a dinner party with his wife was attacked by a group of men who poured fluid on him and set him on fire in yesterday.

The attack has prompted the Indian Government to make a special advisory notice about travel to the city. It follows the murder of Indian graduate student Nitin Garg who was stabbed to death last week in Melbourne.

The man, believed to be 29 years old, is recovering in hospital with 15% burns to his body following the brutal attack.

It is not clear if this was racially motivated, according to local police. However as it follows the killing of Garg and a spate of attacks on Indians over the past 18 months, racial tensions are sure to be stretched by the attack.
